- It's difficult to describe how beautiful and peaceful Michael's place is, we have to thank him for sharing it with everyone that is fortunate enough to stay. You have to watch the sunset from the top of the hill near the vineyard, it's probably one of the best I've seen. Take Michael's advice and explore the property and surrounding forrest, there's so much to see. There's comprehensive maps and history of the property and the area and also plenty of suggestions of places to visit as well. We're looking forward to returning to this beautiful property again.
David16/08/26Beautiful location and cottage! Very peaceful, clean and tidy. Michael is very kind and helpful. Would highly recommend this place for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.
Parinaz01/06/26Absolutely an amazing place, my friends and I came down for my birthday and getting some time away from work. We all fell in love with the place and the beauty of it all. If you love walks and hikes I would definitely recommend coming here. We wish we had more time away to just explore all the tracks on the maps. Michael was extremely knowledgeable with the bush track and land. Everywhere is beautiful on his property from the house you can see the sunrise over the Stirling ranges and by the vineyards the most beautiful sunset to ever watch. Thank you Michael and Pam for letting us stay and we will be back to explore more!!!
Bec24/05/26 - We adored our week-long stay at the Mountain View Cottage! It’s so homely and cosy, especially with the wood fire place. Mike’s incredible knowledge of the area definitely made our stay memorable and we’d never have known to visit some of the places if it wasn’t for his guidance and maps. Highly recommend sitting out on the patio in the early morning for a visit from from the blue wrens! Mike and Pam’s hospitality and the incredible location made this a really special visit to one of our favourite places in WA. We can’t recommend it enough!
Carly08/05/26Really enjoyed staying at Mike’s historic cottage. Cosy, peaceful and in a beautiful setting surrounded by nature. All was as described and Mike was a very helpful host with a clear love for the area that he supports his guests to explore. Would happily stay here again and will definitely explore the Porongurups more another time.
Claire01/05/26A relaxing and easy stay in Porongurup. We especially enjoyed accessing the beautiful local landscape directly from our door, and with the help of Michael's homemade maps.
Thomas11/04/26 - We had a wonderful stay at the Mountain View Cottage. so many wonderful private walks into the NP from the cottage. My boys loved exploring the property especially loved the Cricket Clubhouse.Mike was very helpful regarding walks and the foldable and waterproof maps came in handy. Mike has thought of everything. We will be back .
Wendy10/04/26Loved staying at the cottage, beautiful, peaceful surrounding. Watching the wrens flit around and sitting in the tree all in a row, so cute!Dogs had a lovely time, exploring.Check in was easy and the hosts, Mike and Pam, were very friendly and accommodating.
Sandra25/03/26We had an amazing stay at Mike’s property and would definitely give it five stars! Everything was perfectly arranged and well maintained. The place was clean, comfortable, and had a very peaceful atmosphere—we truly enjoyed our time here.Mike was a wonderful host, very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We really appreciated his hospitality. We will definitely miss this place and would love to come back again in the future. Highly recommended!
Sohaib24/03/26 - We stayed in Mountain View cottage for 8 nights and had a brilliant time. The hiking straight from the door is excellent and Mike's maps together with his knowledge of the local park give plenty of options. Slightly further afield the Stirling range offers even more hiking and some lovely scenic drives. Albany and the coast are less than an hour away and after a day out it was a pleasure to return and relax in the peaceful setting of Thorns Mountain Retreat We could have watched the blue fairy wrens come for food all day as they are so entertaining. Not to mention the kangaroos which are all around the property.Mike and Pam are wonderful hosts and made us very welcome, nothing was too much trouble. They live in a wonderful place and it was lovely to be able to experience it.
Pauline20/02/26Superb Location, Superb ambience, Superb Host! We very much enjoyed walking in the Porongurups from this ideal location. Views of the Stirling from lounge room. Will definitelycome back soon, thankyou Michael.
Moya10/01/26Tucked in what we thought was the middle of nowhere, we found a Western Australia’s best kept secret. A vast space between mountains where nature thrives and fills the soul with its magic. At our very doorstep, we could start unique short trails to wander and wonder at the enchanted ecosystem the region has to offer. From the geology of the mountains, the caves, the kangaroos, the diversity of trees to the 70 species of birds that beautifully chirrup as you delve in the canopy. The cottage too was spotless with all amenities and comfort we could think of. We are looking forward to coming back to this nature gem.
Clem02/01/26 - We had a wonderful family holiday with our toddler and pooch. The pioneer cottage is charming, cosy and the mountain views are beautiful. Mike was generous with recommendations including maps and instructions for local bushwalks and we especially enjoyed the walks right from the doorstep.
Katie10/11/25The Sunrise Suite is a perfect place to stay to enjoy a few days away from it all. The setting and view are stunning. Great walks from the property. Mike our host was very friendly and a fountain of local knowledge. A very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Highly recommend.
Sarah13/10/25An amazing rustic pocket of serenity. Such a special location in the midst of the Porongurups. Watching a brilliant array of bird life and kangaroos from the balcony is the perfect way to relax.Mike is a delightful and passionate host - thanks for sharing with us.
Penny13/10/25 - We had a lovely relaxing, peaceful and active stay at Mountain View cottage. There were 3 of us and 3 dogs which Michael was OK with and was great. The living area was perfect for all of us, beds comfortable, 2 bathrooms and everything we needed for a 3 night stay. Michael provided heaps of information on their property and places to visit nearby. Just sitting and taking in the view and watching the birds enjoying the nearby birdbath was a highlight. There were lots of places close by where we could find local orchid and wildflower species which was great. Certainly will be back as 3 nights wasn't long enough.
Mervi25/09/25We loved it. This is a lifestyle property with lovely walkways, kangaroos, birds and we even found an echidna. The cottage is charming, well equipped, and tastefully decorated. Michael is an attentive and welcoming host. No need to say more. Ee loved it.
Janet12/09/25Lovely cottage on an amazing property. There are great walks on site and the surrounding area has heaps of things to do. It is close to the Stirling Ranges, Mt Barker wineries and Albany.
Anne06/09/25 - Fantastic 🙂 A peaceful sanctuary with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Mike was a great host, full of local knowledge. He’s passionate about the area and gave us great tips on things to do - even taking into account my broken foot. Would recommend this place for sure!
Leila29/08/25Our Pioneer cottage stay was just lovely. From the fully equipped kitchen to heating and bathroom items, everything we needed was right at hand.Definitely hope to return.
Brianna29/08/25Great peaceful stay. Love the wood fire and wood cabin feel. Beautiful area. The property itself has awesome views and walks. But the area is scenic hotspot. Hope to return soon
Storm26/08/25 - We have stayed in many AirBnBs but this was like no other! Michael has put so much care into the space and we are so grateful for the opportunity to stay and explore both the Porongurup and Stirling mountain ranges. The cabin itself was extraordinarily cozy and unique - a perfect weekend stay!
Izzabella24/08/25We had a wonderful stay at the Pioneer Cottage in Thorn’s Mountain Retreats. The cottage was cosy, clean and had everything we needed, and the peaceful surroundings made it a perfect getaway. What makes this place really special is the effort Mike puts in. The maps he has created for walks around the property are fantastic and show how much care he takes to make sure visitors can explore and enjoy their time. The cricket ground he built on the property is amazing, and the views from there are excellent.Mike was a warm and welcoming host, and we truly felt at home. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing retreat in nature. We would definitely love to come back!

Was a wonderful time and there is so much to explore , highly recommend staying here ! Also most amazing tap water … silky smooth and fresh… bring a big water bottle to fill it with for exploring cause its yummay!Thank you Micheal and Pam , Beautiful Place , clean , happy , friendly and just all round beautiful! will be back to explore soon ! lots of love the Colourful Gypsys Ashlyn & Budda!
Ashlyn14/08/25 - We had a fantastic time staying at Michael's, really appreciated his enthusiasm and tips for little hidden adventures
Aparicio11/08/25What an absolutely lovely stay. The weather was freezing so we were very glad of the fire, heater & electric blankets (plus loads of spare blankets, and the hot water is really good & quick to come through). Stand-out thing: the walks around & out from the property, which include a gorgeous sunset spot by the vineyard & even a cricket pitch at the top of the hill. The kitchen is equipped really well with knives that are sharp, pans with non-stick etc & everything you could need. The pioneers cottage is definitely a quaint style, so give the sunrise suite a go for a more modern vibe if prefer. We walked up the grass hill when needing WiFi for hiking routes or similar, just by the main house.Mike & Pam were super helpful & we got so much more out of our 4 days as result. Thanks so much guys!
Sarah04/08/25Great location
Jackie20/07/25 - We had such a wonderful stay at the Sunset Suite in the Porongraups. Such a well thought out home, such beautiful views and just a great place to sit by the fire and relax. Would highly recommend, one of the best AirBnB stays we've had.
Madeline18/07/25Absolutely loved our stay. The property itself was a gem. Interesting and well maintained. Mikes maps for local walks was the best treasure map for our family fun filled adventures. Loved it more than the well trodden hikes filled with other tourists 🙂
Megan18/07/25This is a serene and beautiful place. The accommodation is light and airy with large windows to view the Stirling Ranges. There are blue wrens on the balcony, ring neck parrots on the lawn, and kangaroos in the paddock. The best part of the visit is that there is no need to drive - just walk into the national park on private walking trails. Michael’s maps are laminated for walks in damp weather. We were also delighted to explore the Twin Creeks reserve about 5km away and look forward to visiting in wildflower season. The fire is effective in hearing the whole space. The property is not suitable for asthmatics as it relies on fire for heating. This was a perfect holiday - we hope to be back in a few months time.
Michelle05/07/25 - We had wonderful time staying at Thorn’s Mountain Retreats. Beautiful nature, peaceful location and breathtaking views. Our cottage was cosy and warm, lots board games to play with kids and books to read. Thanks for having us, Michael! We will be back.
Nicky02/06/25An amazing stay with so much to see and explore in the area and on the property. Love the touches of history in the cabin and Michael's enthusiasm with sharing. Thank you so much!
Breana20/05/25Thanks Michael for such a wonderful place!!
David Jesus18/05/25 - This is a great place to stay! Michael is very friendly and has heaps of information about local hikes to do. It is a perfect cottage for three adults, with two bathrooms and a good set up. Lots of detailed maps of local hiking trails are provided, and Mike is only too happy to have a chat about the history of the area, his family's involvement in the area, and lots more! Kitchen was reasonably well equipped, and that was a good thing, as cooking is a must here, as there aren't many options nearby for dining. Mount Barker is not far away though, so groceries can be obtained. The nearby Karribank place had nice sandwiches for lunch and good coffee. Would definitely check them out for dinner next time, as it seemed a great place with quality food. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and will definitely come back here!
Mar15/05/25Mike was a great host, the cottage was fantastic, and Mike explained everything clearly, he was a very responsive host and i recommend very much his place.
Tony27/04/25The place was amazing! The grounds backing directly onto the national park were incredible, with beautiful walks and stunning views. Having all that space to explore, literally straight out the door, was brilliant, especially for the dog. We loved wandering around the property, including the walk around the cricket oval and catching a sunset at the picnic spot. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The house itself was lovely; quaint and cozy, with all the amenities we needed. Michael was incredibly friendly and went out of his way to make us feel welcome. He provided detailed maps of the property and nearby walks, along with thoughtful touches like books on local history and even handmade walking sticks to help during hikes. It truly is a fantastic place, and we’ll definitely do our best to come back.
Patrick27/04/25 - Thorn retreat was an absolute gem to find and stay in! When coming to the south, this is exactly what I had hoped for. Beautiful old cottage, tucked in amongst nature on one of the most beautiful properties you will ever see. Michael and Pam were so lovely and Michael has gone above and beyond to ensure every guest gets a full experience of the surrounding area. I cannot wait to come back here! My new favourite spot.
Ashley16/04/25We loved staying at this lovely cottage! There are so many hikes and trails to explore. The history with the cricket field on the property is fun. We visited a few great restaurants and wineries just down the street. Our boys loved chopping firewood and having a warm fire at night. we also loved the DVD selection for movie night. Michael is a great host and we very helpful. we loved our time there!
Paul14/04/25This is a wonderful old settlers cottage on amazing large country property right in the heart of Porongurup, rich with a family history which adds to the experience. Michael goes above and beyond in managing his property and providing a wealth of local knowledge which really made a difference for us when walking in the bush in remote parts of the National Park right in your door step. Total privacy and peace and quiet apart from the beautiful birds and mob of Roos across the paddock. Do not book if you want to spend the whole weekend on your phone .. this was a welcome digital detox. Bed was comfy sheets fresh and clean and kitchen has all the little things you forget to bring. Lovely family winery right across the road which is great value for a ploughman feast and excellent Shiraz. We will def head back for a cosy pot belly winter retreat, more red and more walks. Thanks Michael - a great host.
Paul30/03/25 - Thanks for everything Mike, a wonderfully relaxing stay in a very special part of the world. I must say, you are in a perfect spot up there in the Porongurups, not just your own property which is fabulous, but also in the granite range itself with its unique landscapes. Hiking in the ancient forests was an exhilarating experience, and having both the Porongurups and the Stirling Range to play with makes it an ideal location for the outward bound types like us. The property was very comfortable and we enjoyed our time there immensely. The views across to the Stirlings - wow, just incredible! We also enjoyed a little bit of touring and wine tasting - another advantage of the region. Thanks again, and best wishes
Philip11/03/25Michael's place was exactly as described and shown in the photos. I loved the panoramic windows, the peaceful location, and the architecture and decor of the apartment. Many places are quite boxy, but this apartment comes alive with its semi-exposed rafters, wood heater placed at an angle, and tasteful nooks offering a variety of spaces to relax in. All the furnishings were of high quality, as were the kitchen appliances and crockery. The location is incredibly peaceful and brought to life by visits from the tiny wrens. It was a delight to meet Michael and Pam, and Michael took us on a wonderful guided walk around the property, explained its history, and guided us on a hike into the Porongorups. We're definitely coming back to this place, either for chill time, or for access to the Porongorups or the Stirling ranges.
Peter18/02/25Beautiful cabin that takes you back to simpler times. Couldn’t recommend enough. Michael has put a lot of effort into making this a great experience.
John02/02/25 - Peaceful homely cabin surrounded by nature! A great little place to unwind and hear yourself think!
Neha27/01/25great stay. we felt right at home. lovely property, amazing surroundings
Inge25/01/25The cottage was located in a quiet and peaceful spot. Many walk trails are right at the doorstep and there are plenty of maps provided for your use. It was beautiful to sit on the patio and take in the sights and sounds of nature whilst enjoying a drink or reading a book. Comfortable beds and an amazing shower. Easy to get to other locations like wineries and the Skywalk.
Kirsty25/01/25 - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great location with lots to explore on and around the property. Very close to Castle Rock and the national park. Will recommend to others!
Kylie15/01/25A nice escape from the busy city. Lots of information provided about the nearby area. Facilities are exceptional.
Audrey05/01/25Such a nice location and quiet. If you want to eat out every night then you will need to drive to mt barker or Albany but besides that such a nice location and the kangaroos on the drive into the property and walking around was very nice. Highly recommend
Brendon01/01/25 - We absolutely loved our stay at Thorns Mountain Retreat. Mike is an incredible host with a love, passion and knowledge for the area which is unsurpassed. The cottage was spotless, with every comfort we needed. Thank you!
Rachel19/12/24Great stay at Mike’s Pioneer Cottage. Mike was super welcoming and accommodating, with loads of helpful tips and insider knowledge on the area. Beautiful views from the vineyard. Great local hikes and vineyards easily accessible from Mike’s place. Altogether a very special spot and a wonderful WA experience. Thanks Mike and Pam.

Craig26/11/24Fantastic stay at Mike's place. It's a great cabin and a beautiful area to get away. Mike was super helpful with suggestions for walks and other activities in the area. We'll be back!
Andrew21/11/24My family and i stayed 5 nights in the mountain view cottage and couldn't have found a better place to enjoy observing the wildlife and scenery of the amazing Porongurups. The views are stunning, and the property must be one of the most scenic in the centre of the Porongurups. Truly incredible.Thank you to Mike for his hospitality. The accommodation is luxurious, comfortable, clean and private, meeting all our family needs. Mike is truly passionate about giving his guests an awesome experience. Thanks to his helpful maps and instructions we hiked around the property. The cricket pitch and sunset lookout was our two favourites. As we travelled with our toddler twins it was a challenge exploring Manyat Peak; Angwin Peak; and Mike's other hidden gems. But we look forward to another trip here when the twins are older for more exploring. We had a wonderful time, and we highly recommend this tranquil gem of Porongurups. Truly stunning!
Catherine13/11/24 - Enjoyed the weekend stay with Michael. He has a beautiful place and was very welcoming. I’m happy to recommend staying at Michael’s place and I would be happy to stay again. Thanks

Emily03/11/24We loved our stay at Thorns Mountain view Cottage. Our host was extremely helpful with maps and great recommendations on walks and places to see.Being surrounded by nature in this beautiful region felt like a warm hug from Mother Earth. We certainly found our stay rejuvenating. It's a very special place to recharge your spirits.
Angela And Duncan29/10/24 - Our stay at the little cabin was absolutely perfect. The location is great for local hikes, including ones only available from Michael’s property which he kindly provides extensive information on. The cabin truly has everything you could need and is very thoughtfully maintained. We absolutely plan to be back to enjoy the magical wildlife watching available right from the back porch.
Rhiannon24/10/24Michael & Pam were fantastic. Offering local knowledge, history, advice, recommendations all with a friendly smile and a chat. Micheal went out of his way when we requested a BBQ and put one together right there and then 🙂 The walks from home were fantastic. Private and every bit the equal of other "tourist" locations but completely private. The view is 2nd to none. All up we had a truly fantastic stay here and when we go back we will be looking to stay here again.
Steve & Karen16/10/24Stayed for a week. Loved the secluded location, adjacent to the national park with lots of private trails, birds, wildlife and wildflowers, and fabulous views. Our host Michael provided us with lots of maps and local information to help us explore. Plenty of room in the cottage for two adult couples, or a family.
Mark13/10/24 - Lovely location amazing viewsEasy access to the local activities
Natalie01/10/24We loved our long weekend here. Mike was a fabulous host with lots of recommendations for walks that only a local would know and was happy to share them. The cottage was beautiful, well equipped, very comfortable and clean. We were thankful of the warm wood burner and all the kindling and wood as the weather was variable during our stay! We only touched the surface of things to do so definitely hope to return!
Angus29/09/24Wished we could have stayed longer. Wonderful, thank you
Cathy26/09/24 - What a delightful place to stay! Gorgeous cottage in beautiful natural surrounds. The place has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Wood fire was a gorgeous addition for added comfort and ambiance. If you’re hiking, walking, looking for wildflowers etc then this place is literally a ten minute drive to the start off points in both directions and to the local cafe/shop. There’s lots of information about the locality within the guest house, very thoughtfully planned out and expect a visit from one very friendly cute little dog as part of you welcome pack lol. Loved this place and will definitely book again.
Adele25/09/24Mountain View Retreat is situated in a wonderful part of the South West, the views from our accommodation were exceptional. Our accommodation had everything you would need to feel at home, and located within easy reach to Bluff Knoll and Castle Rock. We recommend staying here to everyone. Sarah03/07/24 - Had a wonderful time at Thorn's Moutain Retreat where we stayed at a clean, comfy and cosy cottage that has a well equipped kitchen and extra bedding for warmth. The views from the cottage was amazing, especially during sunrise and it was conveniently located next to the Porongorups and 30mins drive to the Stirling Ranges for the avid hikers. Mike was an exceptional host who made sure we were settled in and gave us some great suggestions for what to do. We especially loved his hand marked maps that took us on a beautiful hike of his "backyard". We would definitely come back here again!
Emily01/07/24Another lovely stay at the cottage. We love the rustic feel and the log fire. Peaceful and idyllic location so close to lovely walking trails. It was wonderful spotting birds on the property and many right from the veranda. Thanks to Mike for being a great host - he shares his deep knowledge of the local area and natural environment so generously. We love your passion and enthusiasm for hiking in the Porongups and surrounds!
Catherine28/06/24A unique and breathtaking location that makes for the perfect base camp for anyone looking to explore the region.
Mark31/05/24
With Mike as our host, we came away from the Porongurups feeling really connected with this beautiful area and connected to its significance. Mike is very knowledgeable about the national park’s features and its heritage. This family and the property are part of the region’s makeup. Bush walks from the property with spring wildflowers and great views were a highlight. The cottage was really comfortable and inviting; nicely fitted out and finished with artworks of the area. Mike, and his dad, Peter, are very warm and welcoming, and their wines, very enjoyable. Russell Dilley
Wow! All I can say is if you are looking for an outstanding location and hospitality this is the place to go. The accommodation is truly lovely and has everything you need and more but the location is awesome. A true Aussie experience without leaving the property grounds. Kangaroos in the paddock, trail bush walks to a fantastic viewpoint, wine tasting twinned with the knowledge of Peter (a true gentlemen) what more could you ask. If you can drag yourself away there is the granite skywalk 3 km away and the best beaches I have ever seen with the clearest waters around two peoples bay and Bettys bay, ask Mike the best places to go. We ran out of time on our4 night stay to see more of the area so suggest to stay as long as you can ideally a week you will not be disappointed. Just book it! Tracy Marsden
My family absolutely loved staying here! Mike was very responsive to any communication & provided very useful information about utilising the property & surrounds. He & Peter went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. The cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay. It’s so peaceful and relaxing, sitting on the verandah enjoying the view was beautiful. We loved being able to walk around the property & head straight into the National Park. Awesome! Highly recommend, we will be back!
A perfect little cottage getaway literally in the middle of the Porongorup National Park with sweeping views of the Stirling Ranges, amazing scenery and quite a few hikes and walks right at the back door which took our breath away! Amazing couples getaway but next time will take the kids and explore some more. Thanks Mike and Peter for your hospitality and amazing knowledge of the area. Debbie Chapman

Thank you for the wonderful warm welcome. An absolutely beautiful tranquil place to stay. Thank you for your hospitality wine and incredible scenery.
Kimbra and Darren B
Our third visit and we immediately wondered why we took 3 years to come back! A wonderful stay-cottage is perfect and the surroundings sublime. The night sky after years of light pollution in Perth is something to behold. We enjoyed our stay immensely and made good use of the suggestions in the visitors guide along with Peter's ideas for things to do and places to go. Beautiful location amongst the friendly kangaroos, and thank you for you wonderful hospitality. See you again! Cheers. Kimbra and Darren B
